Zelenskyy Confirms 40 Dead in Russian School Strike

Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that forty individuals have been confirmed dead following a Russian strike on a school in Komyshuvakha within the Zaporizhzhia region. The incident occurred on Monday, prompting the Ukrainian leader to describe the assault as insane. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed hope that the results of the US midterm elections would not affect what he described as Donald Trump’s peacemaking efforts regarding Ukraine. Peskov made these comments during remarks broadcast by Russian state media, stating that they are sincerely counting on Trump continuing his peacemaking efforts.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni dismissed inquiries regarding the midterm election results when approached by journalists. Wearing a red suit, she was attending a ceremony in central Rome on Wednesday to mark Italy’s national unity and armed forces day. She sarcastically remarked that she saw the reporters were very interested in the celebration of the republic and the Armed Forces, indicating her reluctance to welcome the journalistic focus on the US midterms. Meloni had previously positioned herself as a key European ally to Trump until April, when relations deteriorated over Italy’s refusal to support the US-Israeli war and Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo for condemning the conflict. Although relations appeared to improve at the G7 summit in June, Trump claimed Meloni begged him for a photo, a story she called a total invention.
Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani commented on the midterms, stating that Italy’s relationship with the US remains unchanged regardless of who is in government or the parliamentary situation. In an interview with Il Messaggero, Tajani said they have never been Trumpians and that Meloni is not a Maga supporter either. Matteo Salvini, leader of the League party, issued a statement saying that when a population votes, their vote must always be respected and understood. The party also expressed hope that the outcome would speed up efforts to end wars and restore peace. Peskov added that governing in the United States will be almost impossible in the coming years given the level of internal division and polarisation, according to a European politician.
