Hurricane Simon Intensifies to Category 4 as Mexico Prepares

Hurricane Simon has intensified into a formidable Category 4 storm off the Pacific coast of Mexico, generating sustained wind speeds of up to 241 kilometers per hour (150 mph). The National Hurricane Center reported that the system is expected to approach or make landfall just inland of Mexico’s west-central coast late Saturday or early Sunday. At the time of the latest update, the center of the hurricane was located approximately 115 miles (185 km) south-southwest of Manzanillo, with meteorologists noting that further strengthening remains possible before the storm makes contact with land.
The agency warned that the hurricane could deliver between 10 and 20 inches (25 to 51 cm) of rainfall to parts of southwestern Mexico through Sunday. Officials emphasized that this precipitation will likely trigger life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in regions characterized by steep terrain. Residents were urged to finalize preparations to safeguard lives and property against these severe weather conditions.
Authorities have issued a hurricane warning for sections of the Pacific coast south of the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, including the area surrounding Manzanillo, which serves as the country’s largest Pacific port. Additionally, a tropical storm watch remains in effect further south toward Lazaro Cardenas. In response to the approaching threat, the state government of Jalisco suspended classes on Friday and Monday across 22 coastal municipalities. Emergency services began evacuating residents from areas identified as high-risk.
In Puerto Vallarta, businesses boarded up windows and placed sandbags at entrances as the storm drew nearer. Local officials also instructed hotels and other tourism enterprises to ensure that both workers and visitors had access to shelters or safe locations. The popular tourist destination took these precautionary measures seriously as the hurricane continued its trajectory toward the coast.
The situation underscores the significant risks posed by Simon, which combines destructive winds, storm surges, and heavy rainfall. As the storm moves closer, authorities remain vigilant, coordinating efforts to minimize potential damage and protect vulnerable populations. The focus remains on ensuring public safety while managing the logistical challenges associated with large-scale evacuations and infrastructure protection.
