Fatal Train Crash in Giza Leaves 4 Dead and 88 Injured

Cairo – At least four people were killed and another 88 injured on Sunday following a collision between two trains in the Al Ayyat district of Giza province, located approximately 52 kilometres south of the Egyptian capital, according to local authorities. The incident occurred when a passenger train bound for Fayum province in the southwest struck the rear of another train travelling toward Aswan in the south, causing one of the carriages to derail, the Ministry of Transport stated.
The Ministry of Health confirmed the casualty figures, noting that the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. While the impact caused significant damage to the rolling stock, officials did not specify which of the two trains derailed. Emergency response teams and heavy cranes were dispatched to the scene to clear the wreckage and restore rail traffic as quickly as possible, the Egyptian Railways Authority reported.
President Abdelfatah al-Sisi addressed the tragedy via a social media post, announcing that he had ordered an immediate investigation to clarify the causes of the accident and ensure those responsible are held to account. The directive underscores the government's focus on determining liability and preventing future incidents within the national railway network.
This event marks a significant disruption to Egypt's rail infrastructure, drawing attention to safety protocols in the region. The area has seen previous accidents; last September, a driver and his assistant were injured after two freight trains collided in the same district. Authorities are now working to determine if systemic issues or operational errors contributed to the latest crash.
Passengers and residents in the Giza area have expressed concern over the frequency of such incidents. The current investigation will likely examine signalling systems, crew schedules, and maintenance records to identify any lapses in procedure. Meanwhile, recovery operations continue at the site, with efforts focused on removing debris and assessing the structural integrity of the tracks.
As the inquiry proceeds, the government faces pressure to implement stricter safety measures across the railway sector. The collision highlights the challenges faced by transport networks in densely populated regions, where efficient service must be balanced with rigorous safety standards. Officials have pledged transparency in the findings, promising to share results once the investigation is complete.
The affected families have been informed, and support services are being coordinated through local health and social welfare departments. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with rail travel, particularly in areas with high traffic volumes. Further details regarding the identities of the victims and the specific conditions leading to the collision are expected to emerge as investigators review evidence from the scene.
