16 Elderly Residents Die in Nursing Home Fire in Southern Chile

A devastating fire at a private nursing home in southern Chile has resulted in the deaths of sixteen elderly residents. The blaze broke out late on Friday at the single-storey facility located in Pitrufquen, within the Araucania region. This area is situated approximately 640 kilometers south of the national capital, Santiago. Emergency services extinguished the flames early on Saturday morning. At the time the fire started, twenty-six elderly individuals were present inside the building. Ten survivors were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, according to statements from the local government.

The private care facility had a documented history of regulatory issues, having faced fines and enforcement proceedings since 2019 for operating outside established regulations. Jacqueline Romero, the Mayor of Pitrufquen, confirmed that municipal health and public safety teams, along with firefighters and police, were actively working at the scene. She emphasized that these teams were also providing support to the relatives of the victims. Romero told local networks that the municipality had sent a specific letter in February calling for an inspection because the facility was not in compliance with regulations and was subject to sanitary enforcement proceedings.

Images posted on social media showed flames engulfing the building overnight, with firefighters using water hoses to battle the intense blaze. Municipal authorities have expressed their condolences to the families of those who died. On Saturday, firefighters continued removing debris and collapsed corrugated metal roofing from the site, while police secured the area to facilitate ongoing investigations and recovery efforts.
